First of all before getting into the actual artist I wanna give a big fat shoutout to Techlash whomst notified me of 8mm’s Black Cat even though I never received an official promo for it. It’s a bit of shameless self promotion for the artist as he’s featured as a remixer on the album but what indie producer isn’t doing that? None I tell you. None that are worth talking about. Anyway let’s get into it.
8mm is a collaborative project between Sean Beaven (NIN, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt, A Perfect Circle), his wife Juliette Beavan, and Jonathan Radtke (Filter, Kill Hannah). What they create is cinematic music featuring melancholic beats, soaring synths, ethereal vocals, and so much more. Their latest album Black Cat is an electronic smorgasbord of pure emotion that would fit a cyberpunk tale of transhumanism or self-doubt “staring out at the stars” as the song Blown Away states. It’s quite impressive and I’m hoping to get a full review of the album out soon as this is album of the year material.
Anyway the canon version features all the original songs BUT the extended version contains nine additional remixes, Techlash among them. It’s quite a story of how that got onto the album but pretty much he remixed the single on a whim after discovering 8mm utilizing AI to strip the vocals and mixing / mastering the single using a Bluetooth speaker as his sole audio output, connected with Sean Beaven via LinkedIn after signing up for a free trial, and voila, he’s in.
Black Cat is available in both digital and vinyl formats.
