Robots in Love have been around for around seven years at this point and they’ve garnered a bit of a cult following. However, Winter 2023 saw something a little odd happen, a little different, as founder Elenor Rayner and two of her friends, Alex Burchell and Tony Lumsden, decided to get together and jam a bit. The result was magic as all three decided to continue working together; their opposite backgrounds in EBM, goth, industrial, progressive metal, drum’n’bass, and much, much more formed a trilogy of creativity. And from there a new era of Robots in Love was born. One of the best things born from this was their most recent single ‘The Sequel’.
The moment the prequel of an EBM bassline began to roll in at the start of the song, I knew I was in for a good time. And when the robotic like announcement came on I was absorbed into a dystopian future like I have been many times before. Sleek electronic bass rolls forward before guitar riffs blast forth and drums are slammed pretty hard for a brief moment before lead singer Rayner howls to the wind. We’re then thrust right into an industrial rock driven segment almost calling out to nu-metal in a sense. Filthy, dirty, demonic like vocals; fun bits all around. The song threads itself with these moments in a six-minute ballad that never tires or bores. It’s an evolving song moving through moments at grand pace, filled with breakdowns and more.
This is a really well put together, solid track that fuses multiple styles into one. Fun, fast, frenetic, constantly moving, vicious and sweet, so on and so forth. Don’t miss it.
