There’s a reason why I read through and check every single e-mail and promo that comes my way; through the hundreds I sift there lies a diamond in the thick of it all. That diamond, though, is rough, scratched, probably bitten, and maybe hit with a bat if the sounds of fakeyourdeath is anything to go off of. The Brighton, UK based duo have been making a blend of post-hardcore and industrial antics since 2022 citing a range of influences including industrial mainstays Youth Code, NIN, and HEALTH. And, well, this is quite frankly the first time I’m hearing of them but I’m so glad their noise landed in my inbox.
(NON)ENTITY is fakeyourdeath’s first effort in 2026, a four-track smattering of what’s been described as an “electronicore whirlwind.” Vocalist Candi Underwood stated that, “Writing (NON)Entity was a labour of love and it came at a time when I was ready to leave everything on the table. It’s dark, it’s painful and it’s not very pretty. There’s no people pleasing or hiding, there’s just the rawness and messiness that comes with being human and for that reason it’s a record that I’m really proud of.”
X/Y begins the EP with vocal screeches like a pissed off banshee the undulates between sung chords and violent anthemic shouts. A blend of hardened electronics and synths match the pulsating energies of the project’s post-hardcore influences. A breakdown appears with heavy riffs before fading out into glitchy-electronic nothingness before building right back into a cybernetic blast-beat crescendo.
Shapeshifter comes in next with industrial metal madness; rave tunes build a base layer of the song but its distorted and butchered and lofi as drums pound directly over all that softness. There’s a lovely duel between these two elements throughout the song, sounding off as something that can be danced to one moment and moshed to the next.
R.I.P.M.E. has crawling noise that opens up into a four-on-the-floor beats with layered vocals that almost seem to argue with one another. Drum’n’bass elements come to life during the quiet moments such as around the minute-thirty mark which plays with angelic like notions before switching back to hardened dance rhythms. The final moments of the track give us non-stop kickdrums before fading out into glitchy, radio like waves.
The final track on the album is a transitory song that rotates between an underground, EBM like beat with bass boost on high and the other effects in lofi mode, before making the jump to devilish guitar chords and shouts that sound more like a noise wall than something that would come out of a mortal’s mouth. The final stretch of the song is technical mastery of nightmarish throttle; it’s like they wanted to end the EP with the biggest bang they possibly could and absolutely nailed it.
fakeyourdeath have something incredible going on here for sure; (NON)Entity is but a taste of what’s coming from the band in the future. At least I hope so. Their blend of post-hardcore, industrial, and a large but surprising spoonful of glitchy goodness caught me offguard and has me coming back for more and more and more. Here’s hoping for some vinyl and further merch from the band in the future.
