While I’m a novice when it comes to everything that has to do with Close to Monday, the limited information that I’m given along with their latest single ‘Quality of Love’ screams to me that this is a band that you need to watch…Or hear, for that matter. Watch if you see them coming through your city, but everyone can hear them anywhere. Everywhere I looked the duo labeled themselves as an electronic rock project. And while that may be true for some of their previous output, that cannot be said the same for ‘Quality of Love’.
‘Quality of Love’ is the love child of ceremonious pop-styled vocals layered over the heart and soul of drum’n’bass. Drum’n’bass; that’s the foundation of the single, but not to a degree where the bassline is overpowering the rest of the song. Weaved between are echo chambers of synthetic bliss and well sung vocals with the slightest reverb on them. The result is a lovely, ethereal electronic track that finds itself in a limbo of dancefloor tempo and dreamy atmosphere. While this isn’t something that normally works, or at the very least is something very hard to pull off, Close to Monday nail the premise without hesitation.
I hate to use the word refreshing as I feel as if so many other blogs and channels and general online outlets use that word en masse to describe any piece of media that sounds good. But, for me, this is a breath of fresh air; a well-produced, mixed and mastered electro well of talent that makes me want to discover and seek what else Close to Monday has in store. Bravo, two thumbs up, standing ovation and all that jazz. I’ll keep my ears open for them.
