Patriarchy has become known for their often sexualized lyrics and themes so it wouldn’t be out of character for everyone to assume that their latest single Pain is Power relates to those themes as well. This time Patriarchy’s Actually Huizenga takes a deeper, more personal note on the single by reflecting her experience giving birth to her son, who also stars as the model for the single.
Huizenga stated had this to say about the single: Pain Is Power came out of the experience of giving birth, one of the most intense, surreal pains I’ve ever been through. I wanted to use the feeling of my body being pushed past its limits ‘hour after hour’, while ‘welcome to the party / destroy your body’ invokes a double meaning: it’s about labor, but it’s also about losing yourself on the dance floor.
Pain is Power is the fourth Twin Shadow produced single out from Patriarchy’s forthcoming full-length album Manual for Dying which is out on August 22nd, 2025.
