I think I finally found a project that channels the same spirit as I do in the industrial hemisphere; a focus on athleticism and fitness through heavy, darkened, and experimental beats. But the reasons differ; whereas I use mine routine for stress release and fun, Trace Amount sees it as a necessity in today’s day and age as a self-defense tool. You don’t know what’s coming next and you’re never sure when it’s gonna come; best be prepared for the worst. Regardless, the project is here and it’s garnering attention and we’re here to tell you all about them in our latest edition of INTRODUCING.
Give us a brief about your band. Who are you and what do you do?
The project is called Trace Amount and I do everything.
When did you first launch the project and how has it come along since?
I put out my first EP in November of 2019 and I’ve been pretty much non-stop ever since.
What bands and artists influenced you the most and why?
For this project I try to be always evolving but the foundation of this project are definitely Death Grips, Pharmakon, HIDE, The Soft Moon, and Scorn. All of these artists / bands represented different aspects of the electronic spectrum but are super intense in their own way.
If you could pick a single song from your discography to explain your music, which songwould you pick and why?
I think either Restricted Area or Clinical from the new record is the most accurate representation of what I think Trace Amount is sonically. Staying upbeat but still having sort of confusing club beats, and feeling more metal and intense rather than the after hours mix.
What is your most recent release and what is it about?
I am releasing FLAGRANT via Bleakhouse on November 14th of this year, and its a collection of songs about a variety of topics both personally and politically. Ultimately they’re all jock jams and are made to be motivators in the gym or your commute to hell, or when you have to fight off some Boston Dynamic dogs trying to surveil your neighborhood and sell data to Meta or Google.
Take us through your creative process. How do you compose a song from start to finish? Where do the ideas come from?
Most of the time when I start a new record I will build a new sample pack to be able to have some fresh sounds to work with. From there I just start messing around in Ableton. I am very rhythm centered, so it always starts with a beat, or some kind of cool echo delay rhythm and I’ll build off it through textures, samples, synth elements, whatever really.
What’s your current favorite song, band, or album within your scene? And vice versa, what do you enjoy the most that’s completely opposite of what you make?
I really like Nuxx AKA Nuxx Vomica, Insula Iscariot, and AFK. I think all 3 of them are super genuine and on a really strong grind in terms of establishing themselves as an artist through extensive touring, solid live shows, and really strong albums.
What is on the horizon for your project? Upcoming gigs, tours, merch, videos, etc. Name it, link it, show it off.
For now, it’s just the release of FLAGRANT. I just came off back-to-back tours in Mexico and Texas through blistering heat and flooding but I’ll be back in the new year. Can’t put this dog down.
