Avarice In Audio : Wicked Die Alone EP : 5.5 out of 10
When my good pal Gerry posted this on the Brutal Resonance Facebook post asking for things to be reviewed, he said that he thought it sounded good but that it wasn’t hitting right with the audience. My dear friend, I’m of the opinion that it’s not hitting right with me, either. A little drum’n’bass under a small blanket of noise but there’s not much to really keep me here. To say the very least, it’s a bit on the demo side and feels like it’s constantly building up to something grand but never really unleashes a menace. Of course there’s a couple of remixes attached like any good’ol Alfa Matrix release, and they add some different styles to the original. But when the original is mediocre, there’s only so much more you can do. I’ve appreciated a lot of Avarice in Audio in the past, but this one isn’t sitting well with me.

Ross Verik : The Demon Below : 7 out of 10
Hello Ross from Surgyn. It’s nice to see that you’re alive and well and still pumping out music. That’s right, folks, that Ross is making music under his solo name and his debut single just released THIS month. And it’s kind of what you expect from him. Explosive electronic music, danceable beats, all with a focus on getting the dancefloor shaking. It’s a short bout of fun, too, lasting three-minutes and ten-seconds which is perfect. Gives room for an extended DJ mix later on in the future should he choose to do so. Fun, fast paced, nothing revolutionary, but fun.

RetCon : EP.01 : 8 out of 10
All hail, retro music done right. This is an EP I’ve listened to half a dozen times or so since it’s release but I’ve never really got the chance to write about it. So, here I am, remedying that. While I don’t want to insult RetCon by saying that his music is simple, I will say there’s a certain beauty to his stripped down production. Whereas a lot of modern industrial music projects attempt to throw everything under the sun into their mix, RetCon finds a gorgeous nest in a sea of analogue sounding electronics. Well done from start to finish.

Cell Zero : Something Wrong : 7.5 out 10
Cell Zero is one of those hidden gems in the industrial scene that needs to promote themselves a bit better. As I do think their music needs to hit more playlists / ears as much as possible. ‘Something Wrong’ is their latest industrial rock single that’s a good ol’anthem. Synthpunk vibes crawl through the song as synths take place of guitar riffs and a lovingly established bassline kicks with each thump from start to end. Not a bad set of vocals, either, hovering between aggravated shouts and spoken word romps. Keep it up; I hope this single is part of something bigger coming down the road.

I've been writing for Brutal Resonance since November of 2012 and now serve as the editor-in-chief. I love the dark electronic underground and usually have too much to listen to at once but I love it. I am also an editor at Aggressive Deprivation, a digital/physical magazine since March of 2016. I support the scene as much as I can from my humble laptop.
