Give us a brief about your band. Who are you and what do you do?
Trianglecuts are a post-punk, dark-wave electronic duo from Manchester. Their sound fuses hypnotic vocal loops, synth-driven textures, and gritty analogue energy.
When did you first launch the project and how has it come along since?
Project originally launched in 2014 by Gwen as a solo, then collaborative project with other performance artists. Doug joined in 2018 and the project took a more post-punk, darkwave turn and songs developed
What bands and artists influenced you the most and why?
GWEN – Nirvana & P.J Harvey – Both are powerful & strong but at times unhinged, disturbing and delve into the darker side of life.
DOUG – Nine Inch Nails & Crystal Castles – Manages to be electronic, machine like but also emotive, heartfelt, and at times brutal!
If you could pick a single song from your discography to explain your music, which song would you pick and why?
‘When Death Leaves’ (title track from upcoming album) – Personifies death as a female character and talks about human struggle – a lot of our songs deal with grief and human struggle – laced with a gothic romanticism at times – The song has an arpeggiated synth line which we’re big fans of and it kind of manages to be slow and moody yet fast and machine like at the same time
What is your most recent release and what is it about?
‘A Way to Escape’ – Female trauma – wanting to escape difficult situations – Ambiguous, messed up and confusing situations. Inner turmoil and fighting with yourself
Take us through your creative process. How do you compose a song from start to finish? Where do the ideas come from?
We tend to jam out ideas on electronic hardware with Gwen singing through vocal FX and loopstation. Lyrics come out of what Gwen is reading at the time – In the case of this song Gwen was reading books about trauma both psychologically and as expressed through performance art.
What’s your current favorite song, band, or album within your scene? And vice versa, what do you enjoy the most that’s completely opposite of what you make?
Current scene fave – Percepticide: The Death of Reality album by Pixel Grip. Opposite examples – GWEN – Philip Glass (minimalist composer) DOUG – Paradise Lost (Yorkshire doom goth metal pioneers).
What is on the horizon for your project?
A Way to Escape – New single with video OUT 5th December – Released under Ghost Replica Media from upcoming album ‘When Death Leaves’ (out next year) which will have an accompanying limited edition physical cassette tape, and t-shirt.
