As the next seven trumpets of Antioch signal the downfall of the world as we know it, there sometimes is a glimmer of light or a breach in the fabric of darkness makes its way to the sensory highways that gives some of us the armor to deal with the shadows that loom and even manifest in specific forms tailored to our unique set of circumstances.
That path leads us to “Catalyst”, the new single from LA’s modern day Troubadours, Hallows. “Catalyst” marks the next phase of Vanee and Dom’s journey exploring the human psyche set to an amalgamation of sonic architecture, melody, darkness and human experiences meticulously crafted into a short story in an ongoing anthology of coping methods, emotion and human compassion. The lyrics to “Catalyst” follow the modus operandi of self-destructive behavior and trying to pull someone out of a difficult place in a seemingly unforgiving world. Hallows’ strategy in song writing yields huge benefits as both Vanee and Dom share all responsibilities from writing to performing. “Catalyst” showcases Dom’s commanding voice that blends a monotone foundation with strong transitions capturing melody while breathing life into “Catalyst”. Along with Matia Simovich’s production, this track absolutely shreds and will certainly draw some well-deserved attention and dance floor intrigue.
Hallows also delivers on the visual side with a video to “Catalyst”. I always enjoy the videos that accompany the singles. This is no exception. I found it somewhat cathartic watching Dom and Vanee walk around the dark empty streets of what I presume to be LA. As you embrace the theme, a sense of wonder consumes you. What does the crossing of the street signify or why are they strolling down the alley? Remember that breach in the darkness and that glimmer of light I mentioned above? At the end of the video I believe it is revealed. Once again I tip my cap to Hallows. They continue embracing their mastery of story telling on several levels, some easily identified and others a rooted deep within the artist’s own experiences, but always open for us to form our own interpretations as well.
In addition to “Catalyst” being the first single for the forthcoming album, it also marks Hallows first endeavor with the Canadian label Artoffact Records.
